The East of England is set to become a major area for growth in renewable energy in the next ten to fifteen years.

Marine microalgae are becoming recognised as a viable option for producing biofuels. It is fast growing, has a high lipid (oil) yield, can be grown in large quantities.

The Oasis Network from Cranfield University aims to disseminate information on the technological and commercial opportunities in this area to the supplier community in the region.

Opportunities for Algal Commercialisation

The aims of this workshop are to:

  • Highlight the opportunities for algae commercialisation & current UK R&D strengths in algal biotechnology.
  • Identify UK industry needs to take forward the cultivation and use of algal feedstocks for applications across a range of market sectors.
  • Identify strategic research priorities in algal R&D to support UK industry working in this sector.
  • Outputs of the workshop will provide a platform for an industry road mapping event, planned for Q3 2012. The road mapping event aims to define the timeframe and actions required to establish a competitive algal industry sector within the UK.

This workshop is aimed at those in academia and industry with an interest in any aspect of:

  • Algae cultivation
  • Wastewater remediation
  • Bioenergy & biofuel generation & supply
  • Non- energy value added products from algal biomass
